Attachment Wounds

premium evening and late night therapy for adults in the Chicago and Boston area

If you grew up rarely feeling seen, chosen, special, safe, or prioritized, it profoundly impacts your sense of self and your relationships.

Mary Ann Cleary is deeply passionate about working with adults living with significant attachment wounds. While there is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect childhood, some of us received less than what we needed to thrive.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Burying your needs: Hiding your authentic self out of fear of rejection or being a burden.
  • Boundary struggles: Saying “yes” when you want to say “no” just to avoid conflict and stay liked.
  • Hypervigilance: Frequently worrying others are mad at you. Instantly picking up on someone’s bad mood and feeling compelled to “fix” it.
  • Decision paralysis: Struggling to make independent choices without seeking validation and reassurance.
  • Extreme self-reliance: Being hyper-independent to a fault. Asking for help feels deeply uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Fear of intimacy: Shutting down, creating distance, or feeling smothered when a partner tries to get closer.
  • Conditional worth: Feeling like if you aren’t actively useful to your partner, they won’t see a reason to stay.
  • Earning love: Believing you are inherently unlovable and must repeatedly prove your worth to be wanted.
  • Accepting crumbs: Settling for poor treatment or low-effort relationships because a little attention feels better than being alone.
  • Abandonment fears: Experiencing intense anxiety or assuming you did something wrong whenever a partner needs space.

Get to the root of your people-pleasing, relationship anxiety, and self-doubt so you can live authentically.

If any of this resonates, Mary Ann would love to work with you.

Mary Ann will help you identify and grieve what you missed out on when you were younger. You will process past trauma and gently look at the patterns you built just to survive. From there, you will practice pivoting toward intentional, value-aligned choices. You do not have to be ruled by past pain. Let’s work on helping you feel secure in your relationships, confident at work, and good enough as your authentic self.

Guiding people through this work and witnessing their transformation from insecure people-pleasers into confident, authentic individuals is one of the greatest privileges of Mary Ann’s life and career.
